Nasser al-Khelaifi, the president of Al Jazeera Sport and chairman of French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has been named Sports Innovator of the year by SportBusiness International magazine.Al-Khelaifi won the title following a poll of readers of the world’s leading magazine for the global sports sector. The 37-year-old was singled out for two innovative and strategically linked acquisitions which could change the face and the value of French football. He led Doha-based Al Jazeera Sport into new markets by acquiring international and domestic rights for France’s Ligue 1 football and, as chairman of Qatar Sport International, bought 70% of PSG. The club is reportedly set to sign former England captain David Beckham – a move that would be a major commercial coup.

Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, was voted second in the SportBusiness International magazine poll ahead of Hassan al-Thawadi, the general secretary of the Supreme Committee for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Richard Worth, chairman of the America’s Cup Event Authority, came fourth, followed by National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell, who sealed a new long-term collective bargaining agreement this year.

Manchester United commercial director Richard Arnold, Mind Sports Partners managing director Patrick Nally, TV Globo executive director Marcelo Campos Pinto, UEFA president Michel Platini and IMG Media president Michel Masquelier were also named in the top 10. The results and full analysis have been published in the December edition of SportBusiness International magazine.
